Debbie Dougherty for Town Board

Debbie's Commitment to Hurley
As a resident of the Town of Hurley for over 60 years, I care deeply about preserving and supporting a safe, healthy, and vibrant environment for everyone who calls this town home. I’m not a politician—I volunteered to serve on the Town Board to give back to the community that has given me so much. I will continue to listen to residents and advocate for the issues that matter most to them.
I'm proud to be endorsed by the Hurley Democratic Committee.

Experience in Service:
-
EMS Ambulance Driver (2005–2008)
-
Member, Hurley Zoning Board of Appeals (2021–2023)
-
Member, Hurley Town Board (2024–Present)
-
Member, Hurley Fire Department (October 2024–Present)

Achievements in 2024:
In 2024, I led several initiatives to enhance safety and health in our town, including:
-
Establishing a new Town Safety Committee focused on comprehensive safety issues
-
Creating a town-wide Ambulance District to ensure access to emergency medical services
-
Championing and passing resolutions to improve road safety, including:
-
Lowering the general town speed limit to 25 mph
-
Reducing the speed limit on US Route 209 to 40 mph
-
Expanding school speed zones around Myers Elementary School
-
Looking Ahead to 2025:
In 2025, I will continue to focus on the well-being and resilience of our community:
-
Emergency Services & Preparedness: I will lead the effort to contract with a new Hurley Ambulance Service to provide on-demand EMS services and work with the Safety Committee to complete a comprehensive update of our Emergency Management Plan to ensure we are prepared for natural and man-made disasters.
-
Environmental Stewardship: I will support initiatives to protect our waterways, forests, and natural spaces, while continuing to champion green energy efforts, including support for the Greenway Zero Waste and Composting rollout.
-
Road Safety Enforcement: I will monitor and follow up on the three traffic safety resolutions passed in 2024—now under review by NYS DOT—and work with the Safety Committee, county, and state law enforcement to enforce speed limits on high-traffic roads.
-
Affordable Housing & Aging in Place: Hurley and Ulster County face a growing need for affordable and senior-friendly housing. I will support updates to our local zoning laws to allow for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and other measures that make it easier for residents to age in place while staying connected to our community.
-
Fiscal Responsibility: Maintaining a balanced budget and ensuring transparency in how taxpayer dollars are spent is a top priority. I bring decades of experience in financial management from my career at IBM, where I was responsible for complex budgeting and risk oversight on large-scale international projects. I apply that same discipline to town government, asking tough questions, seeking cost-effective solutions, and ensuring that we prioritize investments that benefit the entire community.
